Depending on your company's policies, there are three ways you may be able to access your data: Via your company's URL, your favorite web browser, on your Windows or Mac desktop, and on your Android or iOS device.
Let's take a closer look to see what gets launched in each of these platforms.
On your computer, you are accustomed to using installed software programs, such as Microsoft Office, Quickbooks and Acrobat, as well as apps native to your operating system like Safari, Edge, or Internet Explorer. When using applications locally, the files are saved to your local hard drive, which could compromise your data when your computer is non-compliant with your organization's compliance policy. To minimize the risks involved with using local programs, Workplace places them in our secure data center in the cloud.
We refer to these programs as 'Hosted Applications.' Workplace uses a solution called Citrix XenApp to launch the 'Citrix Receiver - a secure gateway through which your hosted applications, appear on your Windows or Mac. They'll look like they're running locally when they're actually running securely in the cloud. We do this because running programs in the remote datacenter can offer premium encryption, virus protection, and other compliance standards that keep your company's data safe.
Web apps are programs you access from your web browser, such as Salesforce.com and Google Docs. These apps are hosted on the Internet, and the main benefit of using them is that they can be accessed from anywhere, through any web browser.
However, by accessing your favorite web apps via Workplace, you can have peace of mind knowing they're automatically launching in a secure HOSTED browser, making your workflow seamless - and safe. We'll go over more details in the next course.
And to complete your work-flow solution, Workplace for Android and iOS gives you secure access to your company data while on the go, including your Exchange account and company directory. You'll be able to preview and edit work files directly from your smartphone and tablet. Our mobile apps make it easy to sync, while providing a secure multi-factor authentication channel that we call Sign-In Verification.
