Venn is the first purpose-built patented technology for Secure BYO-PC. Venn secures remote work on any unmanaged or BYOD computer with a radically simplified and less costly solution than virtual desktops or having to lock down every PC. Similar to an MDM solution but for laptops – work lives in a company-controlled secure enclave installed on the user’s PC or Mac, where business activity is isolated and protected from any personal use on the same computer.
Everything running outside of the secure enclave is kept personal. Venn does not access or monitor any information including web history, documents and pictures in the personal space.
Unlike traditional solutions like virtual machines or remote application delivery, Venn doesn’t impact computer performance or imped productivity. Using Venn will feel just like using your computer normally, because you are.
How does it work?
Without getting deep into the technical details, Venn essentially does three things:
-
Protects work applications and application data
-
Protects work files
-
Protect work-related internet traffic
Protecting applications
When you log and launch an application from the Venn app, let’s use Google Chrome for this example, Venn applies a special wrapper to it. The wrapper creates a barrier between the “wrapped” applications and the rest of your computer, including other applications. The application is now open in your workspace, what we call the Secure Enclave.
When the application is open in your workspace (the Secure Enclave), it will have a Blue Border surrounding it. This helps you distinguish it from applications in your personal space. Applications with the Blue Border follow the policies set by your company, such as restricting data movement from inside your workspace to outside. For example, you can copy/paste between applications with the Blue Border but cannot paste data to anything without the Blue Border.
To view the data protection policies that apply to you, click the circular Badge attached to the Blue Border of any application when the window is active. For more information on the Blue Border and policies, refer to this article.
Protecting Files
Protecting applications is the first component of Venn. The second is protecting files. When you click on Files from the Venn Launcher, you will see a new V drive letter in the left navigation pane. This is Venn Disk. It can only be accessed when you log into Venn and open Files. This is where all of the data related to the applications you will use for work will live. If your company uses Venn’s own Workplace Drive, Google Drive or OneDrive, you will see these as folders inside of Venn Disk. Depending on the policy that applies to you, anything you download will be saved to Venn Disk directly, or to another file management tool that is on Venn Disk.
Protecting Work Internet Traffic
Any browser or application that has the Blue Border, sends internet traffic over a separate, encrypted connection. We call this the Private Company Gateway (PCG). Any application without a Blue Border is using your personal internet connection and is kept personal. Venn does not see this internet traffic including websites you visit.
Wrap Up
Venn keeps the applications you use for work and company data secure, while keeping your personal stuff, well, personal. Just remember the workspace (the Secure Enclave) is everything inside the Blue Borders. Everything else is yours.
